Q - Does Mountain Rescue - England and Wales need my legacy?
A - Legacies are vital to Mountain Rescue. We need them to support not only the national body with the running of training courses and conferences and provide equipment to teams but also to support the 57 teams that exist in England and Wales. The money we receive and raise from other fundraising methods just does not cover the amount we need to properly run the organisation.

Q - Can I specify how my money is used by the Mountain Rescue Council of England and Wales
A - A supporter can request in their Will that their gift be used for a specific purpose such as equipment, or for part of the country you particularly want to support. However, it is very important to us that, if at all possible, such requests are stated as a preference and not a condition. Legacies that are not specific, that is made unconditionally, are especially helpful as they can be used to fund our most urgent needs at the time they are received. Over time the nature and areas where there is a need, changes. It is therefore generally not advisable to be too specific in your Will about how you want your money to be spent. If you have any doubts about the gift you wish to make, please contact us.

Q - Can I be sure that it will be spend my legacy where I want it to be spent?
A - You can be assured that if you specify the condition of the gift we will use it as you wish.

Q - Are there any special words I should use in my will?
A - Yes, the full name of the charity - The Mountain Rescue Council of England and Wales, registered charity 222596 -simply must appear. The Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland is a separate charity covering Scotland. If your will states that name, your bequest will be used in Scotland and not in England and Wales.

Q - Do I need to tell you that Ive mentioned the Mountain Rescue Council - England and Wales in my will?
A - No, but it is really helpful if you do. It allows us to plan our future on how to best use scarce resources. There is an online form or postal form that can help us provide all the information we require for our financial planning. Click here to find out how to do this.

Q - Are there any tax benefits to making a bequest to Mountain Rescue - England and Wales
A - If, after bills are paid, you leave money and possessions worth more than the Inheritance Tax threshold (2005/06: £275,000) then tax will be paid at 40% on all money passed on above this amount. However, legacies to a charity like Mountain Rescue - England and Wales are exempt from inheritance and capital gains taxes. Consequently, any gift would be received in full and before any tax is charged. For instance, a legacy of £20,000 to the Council might save an inheritance tax charge of £8,000. Your solicitor or other professional adviser will advise on the best ways to minimise the tax burden on your estate, including through donations, in your will.

Q - Is a small legacy really any use?
A - We are very grateful for any amount left to us, whatever amount will make a real difference to our work. For example, a donation singly or collectively totalling £500 can provide a set of waterproofs for a team member or a rope to a team, £1,000, provides Casualty Bag; £2,500 can pay for a stretcher; £7,500 can replace a defibrillator; and £35,000 would supply a Land Rover.

Q - Can I send a legacy by cheque?
A - You can, please make it payable to Mountain Rescue Council of England and Wales, and address it as follows:
The Treasurer
The Mountain Rescue Council of England & Wales.
52 Woodyates Road.
Lee.
London.
SE12 9JG.
