Communications

Typically mountain rescue teams communicate using a VHF radio system. The system allows the party's on foot, vehicles and controllers to talk to each other and to other resources such as ambulances and helicopters.

The VHF frequencies are allocated under the auspices of United Kingdom Search and Rescue (UKSAR). The Mountain Rescue Council is represented on the UKSAROPS Comms Group along with the other key organisations involved in search and rescue, where callsigns are considered and approved. The complete list of official call signs is included in the pull out section of the MR handbook.
