Vehicles

Mountain rescue teams respond to a wide variety of different incidents. Many casualties are quite often a good distance from the nearest road. Quite often the calls are in bad weather when roads are flooded or covered in snow and ice. For these reasons the majority of mountain rescue vehicles are four wheel drive types like Land Rovers. This type of vehicle will allow a hill party of 5 and all of their equipment to be taken as close as possible to the casualty site.

Most of the vehicles are modified so that they can not only carry the team members on the way to the call together with all the rescue equipment, but they can also then be reconfigured to carry the casualty on a stretcher afterwards. In fact most of these vehicles are registered and fully fitted out as ambulances.

Mountain Rescue vehicles are fitted with blue lights and sirens making it easier to make progress safely through traffic. Driving mountain rescue vehicles requires a great deal of skill and teams often work with their local Police and Ambulance services for driver training.
