Scarth Gap Callout 20/08/18

August 20, 2018

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team was called out at approximately 16:40 on Tuesday 20th August.

The Team was requested to assist the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) with the treatment and evacuation of a 70-year-old female who had sustained serious head injuries during a fall near the summit of Scarth Gap.

The full team was called out and ascended from Gatesgarth Farm, Buttermere. Helimed 58 of the Great North Air Ambulance had already landed nearby and their paramedic and HEMS doctor were on scene. Team members assisted with treatment and transferred the casualty to a stretcher ready for evacuation.

Given the location and severity of the casualty’s injuries, the Team Leader requested a Coastguard Helicopter with winching capability. R199 from Prestwick was tasked to the incident and was on scene within 45 minutes. The casualty was then loaded into the helicopter and transferred to Carlisle Infirmary for further treatment.

24 Team members attended the callout which was the 40th this year and lasted 3.5 hours.

Team Leader, Andrew McNeil, thanked both the crews of GNAAS Helimed 58 and the Coastguard R199 for their assistance.
