Suspension Trauma and Crush Injury:

Brendan began caving while studying Medicine at Sheffield University, and rapidly developed a passion for the underground world. He joined Derbyshire Cave Rescue Organisation while an undergraduate, became their team doctor in 2005, and continues to be a core member and team leader. He continued his caving through medical training, undertaking expeditions here in the UK and much further afield, in Spain, Morocco, Crete, China and Borneo. In November 2021 he was one of the hundreds of rescuers involved in the lengthy and complex rescue from Ogof Ffynnon Ddu.

In 2016 he was appointed as a consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals, where he is the lead for Burns Anaesthesia and Burns ICU. The following year, he took on the role of BCRC Medical Officer and also coordinates the MREW Casualty Care exam. More recently, he became a trustee of the Rescue Benevolent Fund  which helps support mountain and cave rescue team members in need.

He will be taking a look at recent developments in the understanding and treatment of casualties with suspension trauma and crush injuries.
